Hello, my name is Officer Toby Olson. I have worked in the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau Since 1993. In the 17 plus years I have worked a variety of areas in the jail to include booking, intake, housing areas, clothing, and M/CIRT (Movement Critical Incident Response Team).
In 1997, I had this idea of forming a correctional narcotic detection K9 team, to help with the influx of narcotics into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. I spent countless number of hours putting together a proposal. I pitched the idea several times over the course of 11 years. In July 2008 my proposal was accepted, and I was selected as the Correctional K9 Handler
In September 2008 I received my K9 partner “Sita”. Sita is a 2 ½ year old German Shepherd/ Belgian Malinois mix. Sita is one of three female K9’s we have on staff. She is a very energetic dog; she loves to play tug of war, fetch with her kong toy, and of course she loves to hunt and search for narcotics.
I spent approximately 3 months training Sita to detect various narcotic odors. January 7, 2009 Sita and I certified to Utah POST narcotics detection standards. In the time since we certified Sita has had many narcotic finds. We are utilized to search various areas within the secured area of the jail. The Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau also offers my services to various law enforcement agencies throughout the Salt Lake Valley to assist multiple agencies with narcotics detection searches.
