Detective Thomson - Dak
Hello, I am Officer Thomson. I have been with the Office for 11 years and started out my career in Protective Service Division. While in the Division I met a canine handler who started showing me how to train bomb dogs. I spent several years training dogs with him and developed a passion to train with working K9. In patrol I spent 2 years in the City of Taylorsville working a grave yard shift. I was then moved to the City of Holladay and worked there for 1 year. I then went to Millcreek and spent 2 years in patrol working the afternoon shift. I was then moved to Drug Court and this is where I am currently assigned.
While in Drug Court I earned the opportunity to have Dak as my partner. Dak is a 6 year old male Belgian Malinois. Dak is a single purpose narcotic dog. He is trained on 6 odors Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin, Meth, Mushrooms, and Ecstasy. I have the best job in the office. I get to take Dak with me to work everyday. Being a canine handler does have its challenges and reward. They are just like us and have bad days. The best thing about being a canine handler is watching your dog do what you have trained him to do. This is very rewarding as a handler.
Dak was raised in a family environment and at the age of 1 he was donated to the Salt Lake County Sheriff Office. Dak lives at home with my family and I. He loves to play in the back yard with my kids, play tug, chase what ever the kids throw and jump on the trampoline with the kids. When the kids leave the sliding door open Dak love to stick his head in and check things out. When I leave for work in the morning everyone has to give Dak loves.
